第一次世界大战的东非战役包含一系列的战役与游击战，最初在德属东非爆发，后来战事延伸到葡属东非、北罗德西亚、英属东非、乌干达保护国以及比属刚果。德属东非的战事在1917年11月几乎结束，因为德军当时进入葡属莫桑比克，并以葡军补给为生继续作战[14]。

由保罗·冯·莱托-福尔贝克中校（后晋升少将）所率领的德国殖民地部队，其战略是牵制协约国在西方战线的部队，迫使其调军非洲。1916年之后，他的战略只取得了喜忧参半的结果，因为德军在该年被赶出德属东非，而协约国部队则变成几乎由南非、印度及其他殖民地的部队所组成。由于政策缘故，英国并不考虑将南非黑人部队投入欧洲战事，而所有的英属印度军队在1915年底前都已撤出西方战线。非洲战事消耗及大量的金钱与战争物资，而这些本可用于其他战线[2][15]。
