哈里·巴克斯·格雷(英语:Harry Barkus Gray,1935年11月14日—),美国加州理工学院阿诺德·贝克曼(Arnold O. Beckman)化学教授[1],其重点研究内容在电子转移领域,并分别在无机化学、生物化学和生物物理学等诸多领域都有涉及。他同时是1991年普利斯特里奖和2004年沃尔夫化学奖得主。
生平
哈里·格雷西于1957年在西肯塔基大学取得化学理学士学位,随后他开始在西北大学接受弗莱德·巴索洛与雷夫·皮尔逊的指导下研究无机化学领域,并于1960年获得哲学博士学位。在西北大学期间,哈里于1958年获邀加入化学年会宇普西龙(Upsilon)分部。[2]在1960年到1961年期间,哈里于哥本哈根大学花费1年的时间担任国家科学基金博士后研究员[3],他在那里与沃尔特·曼奇(Walter A. Manch)共事,并与卡尔·巴尔豪森(Carl J. Ballhausen)共同研究金属复合物的电子结构。[4][5]
离开哥本哈根大学后,哈里回到美国纽约哥伦比亚大学任教,并在1961年到1963年期间为助理教授,1963年到1965年期间为副教授,1965年到1966年期间为教授。[6]
1966年后,哈里转任加利福尼亚理工学院阿诺德·贝克曼(Arnold O. Beckman)化学教授与贝克曼研究所创始总监。[6]
研究领域
哈里·格雷领导的跨领域研究计划包括无机化学、生物化学和生物物理学等,解决这些领域的根本问题;而电子转移化学是这些领域一统的大多数研究主题项目。[7]
在过去25年间,哈里领导的团队一直在测量以无机氧化还原试剂标记的金属蛋白中,远距离电子转移反应的动能。他的团队在早期研究表明,蛋白质内部结构的细节主导了电子转移速率。[8]目前哈里的团队的研究着重在中间体蛋白质的自由基如何加速远距离电子转移。这项研究正与加州理工学院贝克曼研究所的杰·温克勒共同合作,开发能用于测量Ru-与Os-在晶体的电子转移速率的技术,并以铁(III)-细胞色素c晶体参杂锌(II)-细胞色素c方式重新改良天青蛋白。[9]这种将光敏剂整合到蛋白质晶体中的方法,为研究生化反应机能提供一个有效的新技术。[10]哈里与温克勒的共同团队还利用电子转移化学,来探测细胞色素c中的蛋白质折叠机能。[11]
因哈里·格雷在生物无机化学领域的开创研究,揭开了新的蛋白质结构和远距离电子转移原理,使他在2004年获得沃尔夫化学奖。[7][12]
另外,哈里在金属复合物的化学键、无机反应机制、光谱学以及无机化合物磁化学等理论作出贡献,他的第一个三角棱柱结构型复合物的研究即是在这方面的领域。不过,哈里最重要的研究领域在化学和生物学之间。作为生物无机化学重要地先驱并带领这一领域蓬勃发展的一员,哈里为此做出许多关键地贡献,其中最重要贡献在生物系统中于原子能阶的电子转移的基础理论。[13]
