鹭形类(学名:Ardeae)[2]这个演化支是在2014年透过基因组分析所提出,包括日鳽总目和水鸟类[3]。其中日鳽总目曾被归类在Metaves这个过时的演化支,而水鸟类则曾被分类为蕉鹃或是鹤形目的姊妹群[4][5]。
Ardeae has also been used in older classifications as a suborder of Ciconiiformes containing herons and related species.[6]
