根瘤菌目是革蘭氏陰性變形菌門中的一個目。

具有會固氮作用和與植物根系共生的根瘤菌出現在幾個不同的科中。 四個科中的慢生根瘤菌科，生毛黴菌科，Phyllobacteriaceae，和根瘤菌科至少含有6個固氮的，豆類結瘤的微生物共生菌。 例子是慢生根瘤菌屬和根瘤菌屬。 Methylocystaceae的種屬是甲烷氧化菌; 它們使用甲醇（CH₃OH）或甲烷（CH₄）作為唯一的能源和碳源。 其他重要屬是人類病原體巴爾通體科和布魯氏菌科，以及農桿菌屬（遺傳工程）。
