裝飾藝術是指為某些功能性物品設計裝飾的藝術,它包括室內設計,但通常不包括建築設計。在視覺藝術中,裝飾藝術通常與英語中"fine arts"的分類相反,而"fine arts"包括繪畫、素描、攝影,和大型的雕塑。
裝飾藝術和一般的美術之間的區別是後者更加有意義,不過即使是普通藝術中也常包含有裝飾藝術元素。因此在很多時代的伊斯蘭藝術及中國藝術等非西方文化藝術中這種區分並不十分適用,歐洲中世紀藝術也不太適用於這種區分。
19世紀後半期爆發的唯美主義運動推動了裝飾藝術在歐洲的傳播,受藝術與工藝美術運動影響,亞瑟·海蓋特·麥克默杜提出在普通美術與裝飾藝術之間並沒有實質的區別。[1]受此影響,裝飾藝術得到了更高的地位與評價,這一點後來在法律上也有所體現。因為在1911年之前,一般的版權法案只規定不可未經允許抄錄傳統美術作品,這一年版權法案的頒布使得法律對藝術的保護領域拓展到工藝領域,即把裝飾藝術當做以真正的藝術而不是設計。[2]
