装饰艺术是指为某些功能性物品设计装饰的艺术,它包括室内设计,但通常不包括建筑设计。在视觉艺术中,装饰艺术通常与英语中"fine arts"的分类相反,而"fine arts"包括绘画、素描、摄影,和大型的雕塑。
装饰艺术和一般的美术之间的区别是后者更加有意义,不过即使是普通艺术中也常包含有装饰艺术元素。因此在很多时代的伊斯兰艺术及中国艺术等非西方文化艺术中这种区分并不十分适用,欧洲中世纪艺术也不太适用于这种区分。
19世纪后半期爆发的唯美主义运动推动了装饰艺术在欧洲的传播,受艺术与工艺美术运动影响,亚瑟·海盖特·麦克默杜提出在普通美术与装饰艺术之间并没有实质的区别。[1]受此影响,装饰艺术得到了更高的地位与评价,这一点后来在法律上也有所体现。因为在1911年之前,一般的版权法案只规定不可未经允许抄录传统美术作品,这一年版权法案的颁布使得法律对艺术的保护领域拓展到工艺领域,即把装饰艺术当做以真正的艺术而不是设计。[2]
