2019年10月，CW电视网宣布开发剧集，执行制片人包括托德·赫尔宾、葛瑞格·贝兰提、莎拉·谢克特和杰夫·强斯，托德·赫尔宾同时执笔撰写剧本[3]。2020年1月14日，剧集正式获得预订[4]。第一季共15集[5]。剧集在创作时借鉴了《雪山镇》和《胜利之光》等家庭剧。主创托德·赫尔宾表示剧集在许多层面类似于长篇电影，例如画面长宽比、摄影和分镜头设计等，他表示“我们在与有线电视台和串流媒体平台上推出的节目竞争……，我们希望能够为观众提供同等品质的剧集[1]。”2021年3月2日，CW电视网宣布预订第二季[6]。
