爱尔兰首次參與夏季奥林匹克运动会自1924年和冬季奥林匹克运动会自1992年。爱尔兰奥林匹克議會 (OCI)成立於1922年[1]在爱尔兰自由邦成立前的臨時管理時期。OCI附屬於国际奥林匹克委员会 (IOC)在巴黎赛事。[1]這個隊伍的爭議在於是代表爱尔兰共和国還是整個爱尔兰岛，包含共和國與北爱尔兰。[2]
