原鳍鱼属〔学名：Protopterus，来自古希腊文“πρωτο- ”（拉丁转写：prōto-；意为“第一个”，引申指原始）＋“πτερόν”（pterón；翅膀，鱼鳍）〕，通称非洲肺鱼属，是原鳍鱼科（Protopteridae，通称非洲肺鱼科）之下唯一的属，也有学者将其归入美洲肺鱼科（Lepidosirenidae），与美洲肺鱼属（Lepidosiren）成为姐妹群[1][4]，原鳍鱼科则随之成为美洲肺鱼科的异名。
原鳍鱼属现存四种长条状的肺鱼，即西非肺鱼（原鳍鱼）、东非肺鱼、石花肺鱼和长肺鱼，均产自非洲热带地区的淡水生境，捕食甲壳动物、水生昆虫的幼虫和软体动物等[5]，形态及生活习性都与美洲肺鱼相似。

形态特征
非洲肺鱼身形细长似鳗鱼，具有6个鳃弓与5个鳃裂[23]。鳞片柔软，胸鳍和腹鳍呈细条状，背鳍与尾鳍融为一体。它们既能像鳗鱼一般在水中游动，也能以胸鳍和腹鳍在水底爬行[5]。
生活习性
非洲肺鱼在雨季开始时进入繁殖期，会在水底的泥中筑巢或挖洞，将卵产于其中，避免被其他动物取食。刚孵化出的幼鱼类似蝌蚪，生有外鳃，随着进一步的发育而长出一对鳔取代外鳃呼吸[5]。
当河水干涸时，非洲肺鱼会在泥洞中夏蛰（一种代谢率降低的休眠状态，类似冬眠），同时体表分泌出粘液形成一层茧状物，将自身包裹在内度过旱季[23]。通过这种方式，它们能在干燥河床硬化的泥洞中生存数月之久[5]。
