艾希頓·卡特在耶魯大學和愛丁堡大學獲得學士學位，在牛津大學獲得理論物理博士學位。
2009年4月27日至2011年10月5日，擔任美國國防部採購、技術和後勤副部長（Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics）。
2015年2月17日至2017年1月20日，擔任第25任美國國防部部長。
