在中文和英文中，艺术与美术的名称常出现混用情况，严格来说艺术对应英文的Art，是广义和广泛的概念，[[美术]]对应英文的Fine Art，是狹义的，仅是艺术的表达形式之一。艺术包括“[[绘画]]”、“[[雕塑]]”、“[[建筑]]”、“[[文学]]”、“[[音乐]]”、“[[戏剧]]”、“[[舞蹈]]”、“[[电影]]”乃至"[[游戏]]"等范疇，而“美术”一般指的是以“绘画”、“雕塑”为核心的[[视觉艺术]]。但在日常用语中，艺术与[[美术]]常常划上等号，在教育界也曾出现争议，造成相关艺术类目学生的困惑。
