動畫新聞網在1998年7月由賈斯汀·賽瓦基斯（Justin Sevakis）創立<ref name="what is ann"/>。2000年5月，目前的主編克里斯托弗·麥克唐納（Christopher Macdonald）加入編輯工作組，代替了前任主編艾薩克·亞歷山大（Isaac Alexander）<ref name="anime3000">{{cite web|last=Russell|first=Sean|title=Interview - Christopher Macdonald - Part One|url=http://www.anime3000.com/interviews/ann.html|date=2006-10-24|accessdate=2008-02-18|||}}</ref>。2004年秋，ANN 編輯人員正式参與動畫雜誌《Protoculture Addicts》的編輯工作。從2005年1月起，Protoculture Addicts開始在ANN的控制下發表文章<ref name="join forces"/><ref>{{cite web|last=Crocker|first=Janet|title=Addicts Nip/Tuck|url=http://www.animefringe.com/magazine/2004/10/feature/05.php|work=Anime Fringe|date=October 2004|accessdate=2008-02-18|||}}</ref>。2004年9月7日，美國[[Syfy|科幻頻道]]在線通訊把ANN評為每週網站<ref name="scifiweekly"/>。2007年1月，ANN發起獨立的澳大利亞版本<ref name="australia"/>。2008年2月，ANN在Active Anime網站的2007年25個最好的動畫網站名單中名列第二位<ref>{{cite web|title=Active Anime Top 25|publisher=Active Anime|date=2008-02-17|url=http://www.activeanime.com/html/content/view/2628/36/|accessdate=2008-02-18|||}}</ref>。

ANN發表經過其編輯人員研究過的動畫和漫畫相關的資訊。其他的貢獻者在ANN編輯人員的認可之下也撰寫新聞<ref name="anime3000"/><ref name="can i submit">{{cite web|title=Can I submit an article?|url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/faq#submit_articles|work=FAQ|publisher=Anime News Network|accessdate=2008-02-18|||}}</ref>。在網頁的百科全書“encyclopedia”部份設有動畫，漫畫和動漫關連企業的列表<ref name="scifiweekly"/>。ANN開設了一些定期專欄，其中包括一個問答專欄“Hey Answerman”，一個叫“Shelf Life”的評論專欄和一個對比動畫原始和更改後版本的列表“The Edit List”<ref>{{cite web|title=Columns|url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/views|publisher=Anime News Network|accessdate=2008-02-18|||}}</ref>。ANN編輯人員還在網站上發表他們自己的網誌<ref>{{cite web|title=ANN Staff and Industry Blogs|url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/blogs/|publisher=Anime News Network|accessdate=2008-02-21|||}}</ref>。
