佤语是佤族所使用的语言，按照世界语言谱系分类法，属南亚语系卡西—克木语族佤德昂语支的语言。

佤语分三个方言：

另外，佤语中还有15组双元音： iu, ɯi, ui, ia, ɤi, ua, ei, ou, oi~ɔi, ai, aɯ, au和2组三元音：iau, uai。佤语的一般音节结构是C(C)(V)V(V)(C)，只有几个字有零首字母（即字首没有辅音者）。^[1]

佤语巴饶克方言清浊塞音声母都有送气和不送气的区别。不送气声母的音节有元音松紧对立。没有声调对立。

1912年，美国传教士永伟里、永文森到澜沧、沧源传教，创制了一套拉丁字母佤文，群众称为“撒拉文”，但是不太完备，不能表示浊送气音和元音的松紧。现在使用的佤文是中华人民共和国1950年代创制的拉丁字母文字，以沧源县岩帅镇的语音为标准，用上加横线表示松元音。
